WE BELIEVE IN THE

RESTORATIVE POWER

OF TREE-PLANTING

OUR WHY

At HAFIZAH GHAZALI, we believe in the restorative power of tree-planting. While we continue to work towards a more sustainable supply chain, we also have a part to play in the protection of our ecosystem.

Planting trees is one of the most powerful (and easiest) things you can do create a positive impact on the environment. It regulates the climate and combats climate change, cleans the air, prevents soil erosion, enhances biodiversity and restores habitat for native animals.

"POKOK KITA" INITIATIVE: THE STORY

Our plant-a-tree initiative started in June 2020 for Father's day. Prior to this, we plant a tree for every purchase from HAFIZAH GHAZALI. As the requests from customers to contribute to this cause increases, we initiated "Trees for Abah" in conjunction with Father's day (June 20th) as well as World Rainforest Day (June 22nd).  For a small amount, anyone can dedicate and plant trees on behalf of their fathers. In addition, contributors will also receive a personalised e-cert.

To our surprise, the initiative was a big hit and it drew contributions for more than 4000 trees within 12 hours! The response was heartwarming; our team received hundreds of registrations and enquiries poured in for days after that.

OUR PLANTING PARTNER

lindungihutan.tif

Yayasan Lindungi Hutan

Yayasan Lindungi Hutan (YLH) is an online crowdfunding platform based in Indonesiathat raises funds for local forest and environmental conservation projects. The YLH team assesses sites that are degraded due to agricultural use, deforestation and climate change and partners with local farmers and communities in the area to create a planting and conservation plans.

To-date, they have planted more than 100,000 trees and over 400 campaigns led with other organisations since 2016.

Why and how they started

In 2016, the YLH team came across local farmers in Semarang living under impoverished conditions due to years of tidal flooding. To elevate them from their plight, they raise funds which enabled the farmers to plant seedlings around the coastal area to reduce coastal erosion and abrasion.

This in turn allowed the farmers to continue growing crops in their village.

With increased support from more farmers, environmental activists and students, YLH continues to raise awareness of global warming, tidal flooding and carbon emissions through their tree-planting campaigns.

LHxHG: which site are we supporting?

Funds from our Pokok Kita Initiative will support two planting sites:

1. Pantai Trimulyo in Semarang, Central Java &

2. Pantai Bahagia in Bekasi, West Java

Why the two sites?

Over the years, there are increasing reports of areas in Indonesia experiencing coastal abrasion as a result of tidal floods. Climate change and rising sea levels further exacerbated the problem,  destroying farms, fish ponds and residential areas.

For the local villagers, this phenomenon not only means inundated homes and schools but it affects their means of livelihood.

In an article published by CNA on August 2020, it was reported that villagers affected by the floods are planting mangrove trees in a bid to save their village. Mr Sonhaji, a 35-year old resident of Beting village in West Java have planted more than 300,000 mangrove trees in his village to rebuilt the ecosystem. He said, "Thanks to the mangroves, waves from the sea don’t directly hit our home. The mangroves slow down the erosion rate although they cannot stop it completely,”

Among Yayasan Lindungi Hutan's partners

YLH has over 17 planting sites across the country

The overwhelming response inspired our team to continue running this platform as a means for the public to participate in conservation projects and play a part to combat climate change. As a result, the "Pokok Kita" initiative came about in July 2020 as a permanent plant-a-tree platform for customers and non-customers alike. The slots for contribution opens on the last week of every month and all contributors receive a e-cert for the trees they plant  :)

With the support and contribution of our customers, we have planted close to 5000 trees at TAHURA (Taman Hutan Raya) in North Sumatra in 2020 alone.
